A monumental garden ruler, giant fiery amber flower spikes and breathtaking summer grandeur!
If you are looking for a perennial plant that will create an absolute sensation in the garden and act as a grandiose, living sculpture, Eremurus Cleopatra, also known as the desert candle, is perfection itself. This is one of the tallest, most impressive and majestic plants in the world. Cleopatra stands out with its unusual, warm and fiery palette, which literally "ignites" the flower bed in early summer, giving the garden an expressive vertical dimension and high-fashion aristocracy.
👑 Skyscraper height and fiery amber candles
This variety boasts truly monumental dimensions that make everyone passing by stop and catch their breath. The straight, massive and amazingly strong flower stalks of Eremurus Cleopatra can stretch from 120 to even 150 centimeters in height. They act as stable, unsurpassed natural pillars - they are so sturdy that they can effortlessly support the enormous weight of the flowers and proudly resist summer winds and rain without any additional support. At the base of the plant, a neat, low rosette of strap-shaped leaves forms.
The culmination of flowering occurs in early summer, usually in June and July. At the very end of the massive stem, a huge, even half-meter long and cylindrical flower spike blooms, resembling a flaming desert candle. This spike consists of hundreds of tiny, star-shaped flowers that are arranged very densely. Their color is pure exoticism and a masterpiece: the buds shimmer in a rich, smoky orange or apricot pink, but in full bloom they transform into a warm, shimmering and fiery amber or salmon color. This splendor is complemented by long, expressive orange stamens that protrude outwards and give the inflorescence an airy and fluffy texture. Flowering begins from the bottom of the spike and gradually climbs upwards, providing long-lasting visual pleasure.
🛡️ Unique "starfish" rootstock and nature's friend
Unlike classic bulbous plants, the underground part of Eremurus is a very unusual, massive rootstock that visually resembles a giant spider or a desert starfish. This rootstock is very tough and stores enormous energy to push out such a grand and tall flower stalk.
Underground, Eremurus rootstocks do not seem appetizing to rodents, as they contain specific substances, so moles, water voles and field mice usually avoid these plantings. Above ground, the splendid, open flower candles are a real Eldorado of nectar and pollen for beneficial garden insects – your clients' gardens will be actively and richly visited by bees, bumblebees and beautiful butterflies.
🏡 Place in garden design and excellence in floristry
Due to its grandiose height, unique color and perfect structure, Cleopatra is the greatest favorite of landscape architects:
- For the back and center of borders: It is ideally suited for planting in mixed perennial borders as the main backdrop, above which the flower candles will rise above all other vegetation like a living sculpture.
- In combination with other plants: It looks simply fabulous with blue delphiniums, ornamental grasses, large ornamental onions or dark purple salvias, creating a strong and modern color contrast.
- King of floristry and bouquets: These flowers are ideal for cutting and are highly sought after in high floristry. The large, fiery candles look regally impressive in grandiose floor vases and remain fresh in the home for a very long time, gradually opening one bud after another.
🌱 Practical information on cultivation
- Planting time: Rootstocks are planted in the garden in autumn, preferably from mid-September until the end of October, before the ground freezes. This allows the plant to successfully root before its winter dormancy period.
- Location and soil: Eremurus comes from desert and mountainous regions, so it needs a fully sunny, hot, open location protected from gusty winds. The soil should be moderately rich, loose, light and, most importantly, excellently drained, preferably with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction. The plant absolutely cannot tolerate standing spring, winter or summer moisture, which can instantly cause the rootstock to rot.
- Planting depth and professional trick: Rootstocks are planted relatively shallowly, but the hole should be wide. It is recommended to create a small mound of soil at the bottom of the hole, on which to seat the center of the rootstock (with the "eyes" facing upwards), and carefully and evenly spread out the "legs" or roots in all directions like a sun. The center of the rootstock should be covered with soil to a depth of only about 5 to 7 centimeters. A layer of sand or fine gravel must be added to the bottom of the hole and around the roots for drainage. The recommended planting distance between plants is at least 40 to 50 centimeters.
- Hardiness and care: A fully frost-hardy perennial that overwinters well in the ground in Latvian winters without additional cover. It can grow and spread undisturbed in one place for years and does not need to be dug up annually. Important nuance: in mid-summer, when flowering is over, the foliage of Eremurus naturally dries up completely and the plant goes into dormancy – this is a normal phenomenon, so it is recommended to plant lush perennials next to it to fill this space.
