If you're looking for a lily that will instantly create a sense of luxury, grandeur, and unparalleled height in your garden, the Oriental and Trumpet Lily hybrid, also known as the lily tree Mister Cas, is the ultimate choice. This high-value variety, legendary among gardeners, belongs to the exclusive Orienpet lily group. It combines the enormous, fragrant flowers of Oriental lilies with the vigorous growth and excellent winter hardiness of Trumpet lilies. Mister Cas is perfect for those who want to see something monumental in their garden, something that will reach ever closer to the sky with each passing year.
👑 Fabulous Height and Huge Turban-Shaped Flowers
This variety fully lives up to its lily tree name. In its first year after planting, it usually grows to about 90 to 120 centimetres, but once well-established in the garden, its massive, cylindrical green and amazingly strong stems can reach incredible heights of 150 to even 200 centimetres in the second and third years. The stems are so sturdy that they can effortlessly support the weight of the large flowers and proudly withstand summer storms without any additional support.
The peak of flowering occurs in mid to late summer, typically in July and August. A cluster of huge flowers blooms at the top of the stem, with several impressive flowers opening simultaneously, reaching a diameter of 20 to 25 centimetres. The flowers are elegantly directed sideways or slightly downwards, and their shape resembles exquisite, slightly recurved turbans. The colour combination is soft yet noticeable: the base tone of the petals is pure, shimmering cream-white or ivory, creating a perfect backdrop. At the centre, a splendid, yellow-orange or golden heart blazes with delicate, elegantly scattered brownish speckles. The flowers possess an excellent, intoxicatingly sweet and pleasant aroma that will fill the entire garden, especially in the evenings, and attract night moths.
🛡️ Excellent Winter Hardiness and the Strength of Tree Lilies
Despite its exotic and majestic appearance, Mister Cas is an incredibly tough, healthy, and low-maintenance variety. It has excellent winter hardiness and can withstand even very severe frosts, safely overwintering in Latvian climatic conditions directly in the garden bed without the need to dig up the bulbs in autumn.
As this plant is distinctly perennial, once planted in the right spot, it will become more majestic and abundant each year, capable of producing even 20 to 30 buds on a single flower stalk by the third year. Above ground, its shiny, dark green, and long leaves remain decorative throughout the growing season, while underground, the strong root system and deep planting help the plant safely absorb all necessary nutrients.
🏡 Place in Garden Design and Use
Due to its impressive tree-like growth and perfect forms, Mister Cas is very versatile in the garden:
- Back of the border: It is ideal for planting in mixed perennial borders as the very last background, where the white flowers with golden hearts will rise above all other plants like a living sculpture.
- Near terraces, gazebos, and relaxation areas: This variety is recommended for planting close to areas where you spend most evenings, to fully enjoy its exquisite and sweet fragrance.
- Floristry masterpiece: These flowers are ideal for cutting. The large, aromatic flowers look great in huge floor vases and remain fresh and beautiful indoors for up to two weeks.
🌱 Practical Growing Information
- Planting time: Bulbs can be planted in spring, usually in April and May, or in autumn from September to the end of October. Autumn planting allows the bulb to successfully root in warm soil and start strongly in spring.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or light, bright partial shade, in a sheltered spot. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, loose, and absolutely well-drained. The plant does not tolerate standing spring, winter, or summer moisture, which can cause the bulb to rot. Lilies like their flower heads to be in the sun, but their base and roots to be cool, which can be achieved by mulching or planting them behind lush, lower perennial neighbours, such as hostas.
- Planting depth: Since the bulbs are large, they are planted relatively deep, approximately 12 to 15 centimetres deep, and for larger bulbs even up to 20 centimetres, following the classic rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb. The recommended planting distance between bulbs is approximately 20 centimetres.
- Care: In spring, it is recommended to mulch the soil and treat it with fertiliser for more splendid flowering. In one place, the lily tree can grow for years and does not need to be dug up annually.
