⚙️ Cultivation instructions and recommendations:
- Soil and site selection: Poppies require a completely open, maximally sunny, hot, and bright location. The soil should be light, loose, well-drained, and moderately rich in nutrients. Heavy clay soil and standing water should be categorically avoided, as constant moisture will quickly cause seeds and seedlings to perish.
- Sowing times and specifics: Poppies have a very delicate and sensitive taproot that practically does not tolerate transplanting, so the best results are achieved by direct sowing outdoors in a permanent location in early spring (April–May), as soon as the ground is workable, or even late autumn for winter. Seeds are sown shallowly, scattered, and on moist soil surface, categorically not covered with soil, as light stimulates germination (they can only be lightly pressed down or raked in). They germinate uniformly within 10–14 days.
- Care after germination: Once the young seedlings have grown a bit, they should be carefully thinned out in the flower bed, maintaining a distance of approximately 20–25 cm between plants. Overcrowded poppies will become leggy, the stems will be thin, and flowering will be sparse.
- Watering and care: The plant is extremely drought-tolerant. Moderate watering is only necessary during the germination phase and during prolonged summer heat periods. If you wish to obtain beautiful seed pods for floristry, after the petals fall, leave the stems in the flower bed to fully mature and dry, until the pods turn a grayish-brown color.
