If you're looking for a lily that will bring a truly royal touch, majestic structure, and make everyone stop due to its regal scent, the trumpet lily Regale Album, or Royal White Lily, is perfection itself. This is an exquisite and pure variation of the legendary Royal Lily, which has captivated gardeners worldwide with its exceptional resilience and sturdy stance. It completely changes the perception of how grand yet elegant a summer flower can be, instantly adding a sense of luxury and nobility to any flower bed.
👑 Majestic Height and Pure Snow-White Grandeur
This variety boasts truly monumental dimensions. The tall, thick, and astonishingly strong flower stalks of Regale Album can stretch from 100 to even 120 centimeters in height, and once established in the garden, they can reach up to one and a half meters. The stems are so sturdy and massive that they effortlessly support the weight of the large flowers and proudly withstand summer winds without any additional support.
The blooming climax occurs in mid-summer, usually in July. A whole crown of flowers unfurls at the top of the stalks, where up to 10 to 15 huge, trumpet-shaped flowers can open simultaneously. Each flower faces sideways or slightly downwards and can reach an impressive 15 centimeters in length. Unlike the original species, which has purplish-purple outer petals, Regale Album is a purebred. Its petals are a shimmering snow-white, creating a perfect and elegant base. The only color accent is the deep throat of the flower, which shimmers in a warm, golden-yellow hue, and the large, bright yellow stamens in the center. The greatest triumph of this lily is its fragrance. It emits an unbelievably strong, refined, and intoxicatingly sweet aroma that fills the entire garden in the evenings.
🛡️ Exceptional Durability and Natural Garden Protection
Despite its regal appearance, Regale Album is one of the toughest and healthiest trumpet lilies. It is exceptionally resistant to common lily diseases and adapts well to various soil conditions.
Above ground, its nectar serves as a valuable food source for bees and moths. Underground, although lily bulbs are often appealing to rodents, the strong root system and deep planting of trumpet lilies help them establish themselves successfully in the soil. As this plant is decidedly perennial, once planted in the right spot, it will grow more powerful, fuller, and produce more flower trumpets each year.
🏡 Place in Garden Design and Excellence in Floristry
Due to its impressive height and perfect forms, Regale Album is one of the biggest favorites of landscape architects:
- For the back of the border: It is ideally suited for planting in mixed perennial borders as a background, where the white trumpets literally glow above other lower plants.
- Near terraces and relaxation areas: This variety is recommended to be planted close to areas where you spend evenings to fully enjoy its fantastic, sweet scent.
- For excellent design combinations: It looks simply fabulous next to blue delphiniums, pink roses, vibrant coneflowers, or silvery wormwood.
- Floristry masterpiece: These flowers are ideal for cutting and look striking in large floor vases, where they remain fresh indoors and provide a charming aroma for a very long time.
🌱 Practical Information on Cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs can be planted in autumn (from September to late October) or in spring (April, May). Autumn planting allows the bulb to root better before the winter dormant period.
- Location and soil: The lily requires a fully sunny or only slightly partially shaded location. The soil should be fertile, rich in humus, and most importantly – exceptionally well-drained. This plant does not tolerate standing water or "wet feet," which can cause bulb rot. It prefers the flower head to be in the sun, but the base and roots to be cool, which can be achieved with mulching or neighboring lower perennials.
- Planting depth: Trumpet lily bulbs are planted relatively deep, approximately 15 to 20 centimeters deep, following the rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb. When planting, it is advisable to leave about 20 to 30 centimeters between them.
- Winter hardiness and care: A fully frost-hardy perennial bulbous plant that overwinters excellently in the ground in Latvian winters without additional covering. In one place, they can grow undisturbed, spread, and bloom for years, and do not need to be dug up every year.
