If you are looking for a spring flower that will bring a truly bright, noticeable, and bold accent to your garden, the large-cupped daffodil 'Sound' is an excellent choice. This unique and high-value variety fully lives up to its musical name – it creates a powerful, visual burst of color in spring beds that makes every passerby stop. It is ideally suited for those who want to see something more unusual in their garden than the classic yellow or white daffodils.
🌟 Unique Cup Corrugation and Flaming Contrast
The 'Sound' variety is a strong, elegant, and medium-height bulbous plant, reaching approximately 35 to 45 centimeters in height. It forms sturdy, thick, and exceptionally stable flower stems and smooth, grayish-green leaves. The plant is perfectly suited for variable and capricious spring weather, as the stems proudly withstand gusty winds and heavy rain.
The culmination of flowering occurs in mid-to-late spring – usually in late April and May. One large, proud flower with a unique, sculptural shape blooms on each stem. The main splendor and hallmark of this variety is its large, flatly spread, and gorgeously corrugated central corona or "cup." The color combination is dramatic and fiery: the background perianth segments are pure, soft creamy white or ivory, creating a perfect, calm backdrop. In contrast, the large center literally burns in a bright orange or fiery red-orange tone with a distinctly ruffled, corrugated edge. This fiery contrast against the white background creates an immediate three-dimensional effect in the garden. The flowers emit a pleasant, classic, and gentle daffodil fragrance.
🛡️ Invincible Garden Shield Against Rodents and Wildlife
Like other large daffodils, 'Sound' is an excellent natural helper in garden protection. The entire plant, but especially the underground bulb, contains the natural protective substance lycorine. This alkaloid is poisonous and extremely unpalatable to rodents. Therefore, 'Sound' bulbs will act as a reliable, natural repellent – they will completely deter and drive away moles, water voles, mice, and voles from your beds. Clever gardeners plant these large-cupped daffodils alternately with tulips or lilies to create a secure protective barrier and protect the sweet bulbs of other flowers from garden pests. Deer and rabbits also completely ignore this plant. In contrast, above ground, the flower nectar serves as valuable early forage for bees.

Due to its ideal proportions and vibrant, fiery contrast, 'Sound' is an excellent tool in garden planning:
- In mixed spring beds: It looks fantastic next to dark blue hyacinths, bright purple or yellow tulips, and early spring perennials.

🌱 Practical Information for Cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in autumn – ideally from mid-September to late October. It is advisable to plant daffodils early, while the soil is still warm, so they can successfully develop a strong root system before winter frost sets in.
- Location and soil: Will thrive best in full sun or bright, light partial shade. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, loose, and absolutely well-drained. The plant does not tolerate standing spring or winter moisture and heavy clay, which can cause bulb rot.
- Planting depth: Bulbs are planted approximately 12 to 15 centimeters deep (three times the bulb's height), leaving about 12 to 15 centimeters between them. For maximum visual effect, it is recommended to plant them in groups or "nests" of 5 to 10 bulbs together.
- Winter hardiness and care: A fully frost-hardy perennial bulbous plant that overwinters well in the ground in Latvian winters without additional covering. In one place, they can grow undisturbed, spread, and bloom for 4 to 5 years, forming increasingly lush and abundant flowering clumps.
