An exotic spring tropical wonder, an unusual colour combination, and sophisticated aristocratic charm!
If you are looking for a spring bulb flower that will bring true exoticism, unparalleled elegance, and warm, sunny energy to your garden or online store assortment, the exclusive trumpet daffodil Lorikeet is perfection itself. This high-value variety gets its unusual name from the magnificent and vibrant tropical parrot, the Lorikeet, and its flowers fully reflect this natural exoticism. This variety completely changes the perception of classic daffodils, offering a rare and highly sought-after play of colours in the gardening world. The outer petals bloom in a soft, lemon-yellow or light sulphur-yellow tone, but the main pride is its long, expressive trumpet, which, as it blooms, takes on a unique, warm apricot, salmon-pink, and soft pink watercolour. This artistic colour combination instantly adds a touch of luxury and a festive spring mood to any flower bed.
🌟 Royal 12/14 size and majestic trumpet structure
Our offered bulbs with a circumference of 12/14 centimetres represent the highest and most valuable premium class planting material. Such maximum-sized large format bulbs contain the greatest amount of nutrients and natural energy, guaranteeing that in the very first spring you will see distinctly massive, thick, and exceptionally large flowers with an impeccable structure in your garden, which cannot be obtained from smaller sized bulbs.
The plant reaches a stately and elegant height of 35 to 45 centimetres. Belonging to the famous trumpet daffodil group means that the variety boasts unsurpassed technical characteristics. From its base, it forms strong, thick, lush green stems and neat, sword-shaped leaves with a slight silvery-green bloom. The stems act as strong natural pillars that can effortlessly and proudly carry the weight of the large and long flowers perfectly straight, without collapsing even in the variable spring winds and without requiring any additional supports.
The culmination of flowering occurs in mid-spring, most often in the second half of April and early May. A magnificent flower blooms on each strong stem, its diameter can reach 10 to 12 centimetres. In sunlight, the petals shimmer with a soft satin glow, creating a stunning three-dimensional volume, and the flowers emit a pleasant, classic, and very delicate spring aroma.
🛡️ Exceptional durability and natural garden protection
Lorikeet is an incredibly tough, healthy, and resilient plant against unfavourable capricious spring weather conditions. It is not harmed by unexpected spring night frosts or capricious April snow, as the thick petals bravely endure the cold and maintain their structure. This variety has excellent frost resistance, so the large bulbs safely and without problems overwinter in Latvian soil and do not need to be dug out every year.
Like other daffodils, this variety also serves as a reliable and invincible garden guard. The underground bulb contains specific alkaloids and emits a natural, pungent aroma and taste, which is maximally poisonous, unpleasant, and unbearable for garden pests. By planting Lorikeet in your flower beds, you will completely and permanently scare away moles, water voles, field mice, and voles from your flower beds. This aroma is so unbearable for rodents that they will leave the territory, providing excellent, ecological protection for adjacent tulip or lily beds, which are so coveted by rodents. Deer and rabbits also completely ignore and do not touch this plant, while the open flowers on the surface serve as a valuable food source for bees and the first spring butterflies.
🏡 Application in garden design and excellence in floristry
Due to its upright stature, exotic salmon-pink hue, and unique trumpet shape, this variety is universally applicable in garden planning and bouquets:
In mixed spring flower beds: It is a perfect choice for planting in the middle ground of flower beds, where the shimmering lemon-yellow and apricot-pink colours create a stunning colour accent and focal point alongside dark purple Ronaldo tulips, blue hyacinths, and early spring winter aconites.
In mass plantings and lawns: The best and most visually impressive effect will be achieved by planting these bulbs in larger groups of ten or twenty together, creating magnificent, tropical spring islands or elegant waves of flowers that are visible from a distance in the garden. This variety naturalizes excellently and can grow in one place for years.
For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: Thanks to its massive stems and compact form, this variety looks expressive and tidy in large containers on terraces, balconies, or near the house entrance, creating an exotic accent in close proximity.
Floristry and bouquet favourite: Lorikeet holds a stable place as an excellent cut flower variety. The straight, firm, and strong stems make it incredibly convenient for use in spring bouquets, where the salmon-pink trumpet adds a special sense of luxury and elegance to compositions. In a vase at home, the flowers remain fresh, firm, and flawless for a long time, gradually and elegantly opening.
🌱 Practical information for cultivation
Planting time: Bulbs are planted in the garden in autumn, ideally from mid-September to late October, before severe frost sets in and the ground freezes. This allows the plant to successfully develop a strong root system before the winter dormancy period.
Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or very bright, moderate partial shade. The more sunlight the daffodil receives, the more expressive, vibrant, and complete the unique salmon-pink colour play in its trumpet will be. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, neutral, and necessarily loose, light. The most important condition is excellent drainage, as the plant cannot tolerate standing spring or winter moisture, which can cause the bulbs to rot.
Planting depth: These large 12/14 size bulbs are planted in the garden at a depth of approximately 12 to 15 centimetres, following the classic rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb above its base. When planting, it is desirable to leave a distance of approximately 10 to 15 centimetres between the bulbs so that each flower has enough space to expand.
Care: After flowering, it is advisable to immediately break off or cut off the flower head itself so that the plant does not expend energy on ripening seeds, but rather directs all its energy back to the bulb. Stems and foliage are cut to the base only when they have completely naturally yellowed and withered in mid-summer, as the bulb collects strength for next year's flowering through the leaves. In one place, they can grow undisturbed and multiply for four to five years without being dug up.
