The variety La Delicatesse belongs to the exclusive group of late double tulips, which in the gardening world guarantees the most abundant and voluminous bloom at the end of spring. The plant reaches a compact, distinctly rigid, and elegant height of 35 to 45 centimeters. From the base, it forms strong, thick, lush green stems and neat, wide leaves with a slight silvery-green bloom. The stems stand out with excellent structural strength and stability – they effortlessly and steadily bear the weight of the large, heavy, and richly double flowers, without falling over even in the variable spring winds.
The culmination of flowering occurs in the second half of spring, most often in May. On each strong stem, a huge, dense, and indescribably luxurious peony-like flower blooms, with a diameter that can reach an impressive 10 to 12 centimeters. 🌱 Practical information on cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in the garden in autumn, ideally from mid-September until early November, before significant frost sets in and the ground freezes. Autumn and winter cold are mandatory conditions for the bulb to successfully bloom in all its glory in spring.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or very bright, moderate partial shade. The more sun the tulips receive, the more magnificently, quickly, and fully their large cups will open, and the more expressive the soft play of colors will be. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, neutral, and obligatorily loose and light. The most important condition is excellent drainage, as the plant does not tolerate standing spring or winter moisture, which can cause bulb rot.
- Planting depth: Bulbs are planted approximately 10 to 15 centimeters deep, observing the classic rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb. When planting, it is desirable to leave a distance of approximately 10 to 15 centimeters between bulbs, so that each gigantic flower has enough space to expand.
- Care: After flowering, it is advisable to immediately break off or cut the flower head itself, so that the plant does not expend energy on ripening seeds, but instead redirects all energy back to the bulb. Stems and foliage are cut to the base only when they have naturally yellowed and completely dried. To maintain maximum flower size and richness of filling in the long term, it is recommended to dig up the bulbs every summer (late June or July), dry them, and replant them in autumn.
