An exquisite spring dessert, a royal peony-like volume, and an indescribable softness of powder pink and cream!
If you are looking for a tulip that will bring maximum softness, an impeccable sense of luxury, and absolute romance to your garden or online store assortment, the exclusive double tulip La Delicatesse or Delicacy is perfection itself. The name of this high-value variety accurately describes its nature – it blooms in the garden like an airy, delicate, and masterfully crafted spring confectionery masterpiece. It will completely captivate your customers with its dense peony-like shape and sophisticated play of pastel shades, giving any flower bed an instant touch of elegance and high garden fashion.
🌟 Peony-like volume and hazy pastel transformation
The variety La Delicatesse belongs to the exclusive group of late double tulips, which in the gardening world guarantees the most abundant and voluminous bloom at the end of spring. The plant reaches a compact, distinctly rigid, and elegant height of 35 to 45 centimeters. From the base, it forms strong, thick, lush green stems and neat, wide leaves with a slight silvery-green bloom. The stems stand out with excellent structural strength and stability – they effortlessly and steadily bear the weight of the large, heavy, and richly double flowers, without falling over even in the variable spring winds.
The culmination of flowering occurs in the second half of spring, most often in May. On each strong stem, a huge, dense, and indescribably luxurious peony-like flower blooms, with a diameter that can reach an impressive 10 to 12 centimeters. The color palette is pure poetry and a work of art: the base tone of the petals is a shimmering creamy white, ivory, or a soft cappuccino watercolor. As the flower develops and catches the spring sun's rays, the edges, middle, and many layers of the petals are elegantly and warmly washed with a romantic powder pink, soft salmon, or pearl pink shade. In sunlight, the countless petals shimmer with a soft satin glow, creating a stunning three-dimensional volume and airiness. The flowers emit a pleasant, classic, and sweet spring fragrance.
🛡️ Durability and reliability of double hybrids
La Delicatesse is an incredibly hardy, healthy, and resistant plant to adverse capricious spring weather conditions. As this is a premium hybrid variety, the petal structure is thick, dense, and firm. They perfectly withstand sudden spring night frosts and do not lose their impeccable shape even after heavy spring rains, as the petals are tightly arranged in countless layers. This variety has excellent frost resistance, so the large bulbs safely and without problems overwinter in Latvian soil and do not need to be dug out every year for winter.
Above ground, the magnificent, huge flower cups serve as a valuable and abundant food source for bees and the first spring butterflies after the long winter dormancy period. The underground bulbs successfully absorb all necessary nutrients, providing the plant with maximum strength for the arrival of spring.
🏡 Application in garden design, container culture, and floristry
Due to its compact size and impeccable powder pink hue, this variety is a favorite among gardeners and florists in garden planning and bouquets:
- In mixed spring beds: It is a perfect choice for planting in the foreground or middle ground of flower beds, where the soft pastel shades create an excellent color accent and harmony next to white or dark purple tulips, blue hyacinths, and creamy yellow daffodils.
- In mass plantings and display beds: The best and most visually showstopping effect will be achieved by planting these bulbs in larger groups of five, ten, or twenty bulbs together, creating magnificent, airy spring islands or elegant waves of flowers that look like a dense and sophisticated peony carpet.
- For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: Thanks to its sturdy stems and compact form, this variety is perfectly suited for spring compositions in large containers on terraces, balconies, or by the house entrance, creating a luxurious and neat accent in close proximity.
- Queen of floristry and bouquets: La Delicatesse is a fantastic cut flower variety. The large, double flowers look incredibly rich in spring bouquets – just like spring peonies, and due to their straight, strong stems, they are ideal for floral compositions, remaining fresh in a vase at home for a very long time, gradually and fascinatingly opening one delicate petal layer after another.
🌱 Practical information on cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in the garden in autumn, ideally from mid-September until early November, before significant frost sets in and the ground freezes. Autumn and winter cold are mandatory conditions for the bulb to successfully bloom in all its glory in spring.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or very bright, moderate partial shade. The more sun the tulips receive, the more magnificently, quickly, and fully their large cups will open, and the more expressive the soft play of colors will be. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, neutral, and obligatorily loose and light. The most important condition is excellent drainage, as the plant does not tolerate standing spring or winter moisture, which can cause bulb rot.
- Planting depth: Bulbs are planted approximately 10 to 15 centimeters deep, observing the classic rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb. When planting, it is desirable to leave a distance of approximately 10 to 15 centimeters between bulbs, so that each gigantic flower has enough space to expand.
- Care: After flowering, it is advisable to immediately break off or cut the flower head itself, so that the plant does not expend energy on ripening seeds, but instead redirects all energy back to the bulb. Stems and foliage are cut to the base only when they have naturally yellowed and completely dried. To maintain maximum flower size and richness of filling in the long term, it is recommended to dig up the bulbs every summer (late June or July), dry them, and replant them in autumn.
