A historic spring masterpiece, dramatic red and white contrast, and brilliantly exotic, striped foliage!
If you're looking for a low-growing spring bulb flower that will bring maximum vibrancy, expressive texture, and royal grandeur to the very forefront of your flower beds, the Greig botanical tulip Czaar Peter is perfection itself. This legendary, multi-award-winning, and globally beloved heritage variety is named in honor of Peter the Great, the Russian Tsar. It perfectly combines the best that wild tulip breeding can offer – striking two-tone contrast, exceptionally sturdy, low growth, and incredibly decorative leaves. It is a gem of high garden fashion that adds an immediate touch of luxury and tidiness to any spring bed.
🌟 Compact cup and majestic leaf patterns
The Czaar Peter variety belongs to the group of low-growing Greig tulips, which are famous in the gardening world for having the most splendid and unusual foliage among tulips. The plant reaches a compact and tidy height of 20 to 30 centimeters. In early spring, short, exceptionally thick, and astonishingly stable stems emerge from the small bulb. This stately posture is surrounded by a fabulously beautiful rosette of leaves – their wide, wavy, and lush green leaves are adorned with a vibrant and dramatic natural splendor – parallel, saturated purple, dark burgundy, or chocolate brown stripes, speckles, and spots. This pattern draws attention in the garden even before the flowers bloom and remains decorative throughout spring.
The culmination of flowering occurs in early to mid-spring, most often in April and early May. Each sturdy stem produces one unusually large, classically and perfectly shaped flower cup, which, given the plant's low stature, looks truly gigantic and impressive. The flower color palette is like a fiery and bold symphony: the outer petals shimmer in a saturated, bright red or fiery coral red. This dramatic background is elegantly and expressively framed, illuminated, and contrasted by a pure, shimmering snow-white or ivory border at the edge and tip of each petal. In sunlight, the petals shimmer with a soft satin glow, creating a stunning three-dimensional volume and radiant effect. The flowers emit a delicate, very pleasant, and fresh spring aroma.
🛡️ Pristine hardiness and excellent naturalization in beds
Czaar Peter is an incredibly tough, undemanding plant that is resistant to adverse, capricious spring weather conditions. As this is a pure Greig botanical tulip, it possesses an unbeatable wild strength – it is not harmed by unexpected spring night frosts or capricious April snow. The flexible, low stems and thick petals bravely endure the cold and maintain their structure without any damage. This variety has excellent frost resistance, so the large bulbs safely and successfully overwinter in Latvian soil and do not need to be dug out every year for winter.
The underground bulbs successfully absorb all necessary nutrients. The biggest plus of this botanical tulip is its ability to naturalize exceptionally well. Unlike large garden tulips, this species can grow and bloom undisturbed in the same spot for years without transplanting and without mandatory digging out every summer. Each year, the bulbs in the ground will successfully multiply, forming increasingly larger, more lush, and generous islands of spring flowers. Above ground, the splendid flowers serve as a valuable and early nectar source for bees and early spring butterflies after the long winter dormancy period. Rodents usually do not touch these bulbs and avoid them.
🏡 Application in garden design and rock garden magnificence
Due to its miniature stature and expressive, fiery tone, this species is very versatile and sought after in garden planning:
- For rock gardens and alpine hills: This variety is a garden designer's dream, as the vivid red and white color, together with the patterned leaves, creates a fabulous and natural contrast with gray stones, pebbles, or light gravel.
- For the front of beds and path edges: As the plant takes on a low form, it is strongly recommended to plant it at the very front of flower beds, along walkways, or near terraces, so that its enormous cups and decorative, striped leaves can be well observed and enjoyed in close proximity.
- In lawns and natural meadows: The best and most romantic results will be achieved by planting these bulbs directly in the lawn or under sparser shrubs in larger groups, where they will form an airy and fiery carpet of flowers in spring against the backdrop of awakening nature.
- For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: This variety is perfectly suited for spring compositions in large and small decorative pots, containers, or baskets on a terrace, balcony, or in window boxes, bringing immediate vibrancy and spring freshness into close proximity.
🌱 Practical information on cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in autumn, preferably from mid-September until early November, before severe frost sets in and the ground freezes. Autumn and winter cold are an essential condition for the bulb to bloom successfully in all its glory in spring.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or very bright, warm, moderate partial shade. The more sun the tulips receive, the more splendidly, quickly, and fully their large cups will open, and the more expressive the play of the white border and red tone will be. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, loose, light, sandy, and most importantly – excellently drained. The plant does not tolerate standing spring or winter moisture and heavy, dense clay, which can lead to bulb rot.
- Planting depth: Bulbs are planted at a depth of approximately 10 to 12 centimeters, following the classic rule that the depth should be three times the height of the bulb. For maximum, immediate, and natural visual effect, it is recommended to plant them in larger groups or dense clusters of 5, 10, or 15 bulbs together, leaving about 10 centimeters between them, thus creating a stunning island of spring gems in the garden.
- Care: Czaar Peter can grow and bloom undisturbed in the same spot for years without disturbance and without digging out every summer. The foliage and stems are cut back to the base only when they have fully and naturally yellowed and withered in mid-summer, providing strength and energy to the bulb for the next spring.
