If you are looking for a flower that will bring a truly unique, modern, and indescribably elegant ambiance to your garden or terrace design, the Ranunculus asiaticus variety Picotee Cafe is the ultimate choice. This is a relatively new, exclusive, and extremely sought-after variety among garden designers, completely breaking stereotypes about conventional color palettes. It completely captivates with its sophisticated "vintage" style color interplay and multi-layered structure, visually reminiscent of luxurious spring peonies or silky, earthy-toned roses. Picotee Cafe will instantly add a touch of luxury, warmth, and high fashion to your garden.
🌟 Coffee Tones and Silky Satin Texture
This variety is a compact, elegant, and profusely branching plant, usually reaching 30 to 40 centimeters in height. From its base, it forms a neat, deeply lobed, and highly decorative, lush green foliage clump, from which sturdy, succulent, and straight flower stems emerge. The stems are noted for their structural strength and stably support the weight of the large, heavy, and double flowers, remaining upright even in the gusty winds of spring and summer.
The blooming peak occurs in early to mid-summer, most often from June to August. Incredibly splendid, densely double spherical flowers, 6 to 8 centimeters in diameter, bloom at the ends of the stems. Each flower consists of hundreds of delicate, paper-like, and silky petals arranged in perfect, concentric rings. Their color is pure poetry and a work of art: the base tone of the petals is a warm cream, coffee-with-milk, or soft cappuccino shade, while the edges and bands of the petals are covered with an expressive, smoky bronze, terracotta, copper, or dark caramel color. This elegant color mix gives the flower a stunning three-dimensional effect, depth, and a slight satin shimmer. The flowers have virtually no scent, which is a huge advantage for people with sensitive olfactory senses.
🛡️ Hardy Tubers and Reliable Garden Protection
Unlike classic bulb varieties, ranunculus underground parts are small, unusual tubers that visually resemble small cloves or spider-like sprouts. These tubers are very hardy and store immense energy for abundant and prolonged summer blooming.
Underground, ranunculus tubers do not seem appealing to rodents because they contain specific sap substances, so moles, water voles, and mice usually avoid these plantings. This means your client can be completely confident in the safety of their exclusive planting. Above ground, the splendid, open flowers serve as an excellent nectar source, actively attracting bees, bumblebees, and colorful summer butterflies, enlivening the surrounding environment.
🏡 Application in Garden Design, Pot Culture, and Floristry
Due to its compact size and unique two-tone "vintage" hue, Picotee Cafe is very versatile in the garden and indoors:
- For modern and naturalistic beds: It is a perfect choice for planting at the front of flower beds, where the unique coffee and bronze tones create an outstanding and modern contrast next to white everlastings or ornamental grasses.
- For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: This variety is a favorite among garden designers for growing in large containers and pots on terraces, balconies, or for courtyard landscaping, where its perfect, peony-like form and delicate color transition can be enjoyed up close.
- Queen of Floristry and Bouquets: Ranunculus are among the most sought-after and expensive flowers in the world of floristry. Their straight, sturdy stems and dense, double flowers add a distinctly romantic, boho-style texture to summer bouquets, and they remain fresh and flawless in a vase indoors for an incredibly long time, even up to two weeks.
🌱 Practical Information for Cultivation
- Planting time: Tubers are planted in the garden in spring, preferably in April and early May, after the time of heavy night frosts has passed. Important professional tip: Before planting, it is strongly recommended to soak the small tubers in lukewarm water for 3 to 4 hours (the tubers will absorb moisture, swell, and double in size), which will ensure quick, uniform, and successful germination.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or very bright, moderate partial shade, in a sheltered location. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, neutral, loose, and light. The most important condition is excellent drainage. The plant does not tolerate standing water, which can cause the tubers to rot.
- Planting depth: Tubers are planted approximately 5 centimeters deep, always with the "claws" or "nails" pointing downwards. When planting, it is advisable to leave a distance of approximately 10 to 15 centimeters between them. To achieve a maximum and visually lush effect, it is recommended to plant them in larger groups of 5, 10, or more tubers together, creating magnificent, artistic flower islands.
- Wintering: Since Asian ranunculus come from warmer regions, they do not overwinter in beds in Latvia. In autumn, when the foliage has naturally yellowed and dried after flowering, and before severe frost sets in, the tubers are carefully dug up, cleaned of soil, lightly dried, and stored in a dry, cool, and dark place (e.g., a cellar or cool pantry) until the next spring.
