An airy and romantic spring gem, snow-white bell flowers and exquisite natural charm!
If you are looking for a spring bulb that will bring incredible delicacy, sophistication, and the pristine elegance of a forest to your garden, the checkered fritillary Alba, or White Fritillary, is a perfect choice. This enchanting variety, much loved by gardeners, completely changes the perception of large crown imperials. Alba boasts its pure, snow-white color and airy structure, which in the garden looks like delicate and graceful spring bells descending over a lush lawn or flowerbed base.

🌟 Snow-white bells and nature's exquisite masterpiece
The Alba variety belongs to the group of low fritillaries and is a distinctly compact, elegant, and perennial plant, reaching approximately 20 to 30 centimeters in height. From the small bulb, slender, airy stems and narrow, grayish-green, reed-like leaves emerge in mid-spring, giving the plant a natural and very light structure.
The blooming climax occurs in mid to late spring, most often in April and May. Large, drooping, broad bell-shaped flowers bloom at the ends of the stems, facing downwards. While the classic checkered fritillary has a distinct purple checkerboard pattern, the Alba variety is a pure gem – its flowers are glistening snow-white or ivory. However, upon closer inspection and in the spring sunlight, a delicate, embossed, and almost invisible natural checkerboard texture and jade-green venation at the base can still be seen in the translucent petals. The flowers have a very gentle, ethereal, and pleasant aroma.

🛡️ Moisture love and natural garden protection
The checkered fritillary Alba originates from European river valleys and moist meadows, so in the garden, it stands out with a welcome and unique characteristic – it tolerates and even loves increased soil moisture and partial shade. While most other bulbs quickly perish in wet areas, Alba will thrive even in garden zones where wetness persists longer in spring.
Like other fritillaries, this miniature is also endowed with a protective function. The specific composition and aroma of the bulb are disliked by underground pests, so moles, water voles, and field mice avoid these plantings. This means your client can be completely confident in the safety of their planting. Above ground, the drooping bells serve as a valuable and early food source for bumblebees and bees after the winter dormancy period.

🏡 Use in garden design and lawn naturalization
Due to its compact size and unique, airy shade, Alba is very versatile in the garden:
  • For moist garden areas: Looks great planted near ponds, streams, artificial water bodies, or in the wilder corners of the garden.
  • In lawns and natural meadows: This variety naturalizes exceptionally well. The best and most romantic results will be achieved by planting these bulbs directly in the lawn or under sparser shrubs in larger groups, where they will spread over the years and create a fabulous white carpet of flowers in spring.
  • For the front of beds and along paths: Creating low, dense, and unusual spring borders along walkways or terraces, where their delicate checkered texture can be closely admired.
  • For growing in pots: This variety is perfectly suited for spring compositions in containers and baskets on a terrace or balcony, bringing instant softness into close proximity.

🌱 Practical information on cultivation
  • Planting time: Bulbs are planted in the garden in autumn, ideally from mid-September to late October. Since the bulbs of this species are small and bare (they do not have a protective skin), they dry out quickly in the air, so it is recommended to plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.
  • Location and soil: Will thrive best in a sunny or partially shaded, cool spot. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, sufficiently moist, and loose. Unlike large fritillaries, this species will not grow in dry, poor, overheated, and sandy soils.
  • Planting depth: Small bulbs are planted approximately 8 to 10 centimeters deep (three times the height of the bulb), leaving approximately 8 to 10 centimeters between them. For maximum, immediate, and natural visual effect, it is recommended to plant them in larger groups of 10, 20, or more bulbs together, creating magnificent spring islands.
  • Care: Alba can grow and bloom undisturbed in the same place for 4 to 5 years without interference, forming increasingly lush and abundantly flowering clumps each spring. After planting, it is advisable to mulch the soil to better retain the much-needed moisture.
