Hyacinth "City of Haarlem" (Bulb size 18/19) – Royal Spring Sunshine and Intoxicating Perfume in Your GardenIf you are looking for a spring flower that will bring warm, sunny energy and refined luxury to your garden, the hyacinth 'City of Haarlem' is an absolute masterpiece. This is one of the most famous and awarded hyacinth varieties in the world, named in honor of the historical flower capital of the Netherlands, Haarlem. It truly stands out from other spring bulbs with its unusual, softly creamy lemon-yellow color, which gradually transforms into a warm butter and ivory tone as it blooms. It is a rare and exclusive color palette that instantly dispels the grayness of winter and gives the garden an immediate sense of luxury.
🌟 Royal 18/19 Size and Majestic Cloud of Flowers
Our offered 18/19 size bulbs are the highest available "Jumbo" or premium class on the market. Such giant bulbs have accumulated the maximum amount of energy and nutrients, guaranteeing that already in the first spring you will get exceptionally large, dense, and distinctly massive flower spikes.
The plant reaches a stately and compact height of 25 to 30 centimeters. From the base, the hyacinth sprouts strong, lush green, glossy leaves that enclose the main flower stem like a protective frame. The stem itself is incredibly thick and sturdy – it is designed to effortlessly bear the heavy spike filled with hundreds of star-shaped flowers, without collapsing in spring rains or strong winds.
The peak of flowering occurs mid-April to May. Each individual flower resembles a small, perfect wax star, and together they form such a dense cylindrical inflorescence that the stem itself is not visible behind them. In sunlight, the petals acquire a soft, silky sheen. In addition to its visual splendor, 'City of Haarlem' emits an intoxicating, sweet, and very rich fragrance that fills the entire garden and acts as a true spring perfume.
🛡️ Natural Garden Guardian and Excellent Winter Hardiness
Hyacinth 'City of Haarlem' is exceptionally well-suited to Latvia's changeable weather conditions. It is fully frost-hardy, reliably overwinters in the garden without additional covering, and does not need to be dug up every year. Neither unexpected spring night frosts nor capricious April snow can damage its firm, waxy-structured flowers.
Just like daffodils, this hyacinth also serves as an ecological protection for your garden. Thanks to the natural substances in the bulb and its specific aroma, rodents (moles, water voles, field mice, and voles) steer clear of these bulbs. By planting these bulbs, you also protect nearby tulips, which are favored by rodents. Deer and rabbits also completely ignore this plant. In contrast, the blooming flowers above ground are the first and most valuable food source for bees and bumblebees that have just awakened from their winter sleep.
🏡 Application in Garden Design and Container Culture
Due to its compact habit, unique color, and large size, this variety can be used universally:
- In mixed spring beds: It creates a stunning, contrasting focal point when planted next to dark blue or purple hyacinths, early red tulips, and brilliant white daffodils.
- In mass plantings: The best and most visually impressive effect will be achieved by planting these bulbs in groups of 5, 10, or 20 together. This way, you will create expressive, sunny spring islands or elegant pathway border accents.
- For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: Since the bulb is 18/19 size, it is ideally suited for forcing and growing in containers on the terrace, balcony, or even on a windowsill indoors. In a pot, it will look expressive, expensive, and neat, delighting with its fragrance up close.
- In floristry: An excellent cut flower variety. Freshly cut hyacinths in a vase remain immaculate for up to two weeks, gradually acquiring softer shades and filling the room with an indescribable spring fragrance.
🌱 Practical Information for Cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in the garden in autumn – from mid-September until late October or early November, while the ground is not yet frozen. Hyacinths prefer relatively late planting when the soil temperature drops below +10°C.
- Location and soil: They will thrive best in full sun or very bright partial shade. The soil must be fertile, rich in humus, neutral, and necessarily light and loose. Excellent drainage is the main prerequisite – hyacinths do not tolerate standing moisture, which can cause the bulb to rot.
- Planting depth: 18/19 size bulbs are planted approximately 12 to 15 centimeters deep (the soil layer above the bulb should be equal to twice the height of the bulb itself). The distance between bulbs – approximately 10 to 15 centimeters, so that the spikes have space to unfold in all their splendor.
- Care: After flowering, immediately cut off the inflorescence itself so that the plant does not expend energy on seed formation. Leave the leaves and stem and allow them to naturally yellow and wither until mid-summer – during this time, the bulb reabsorbs energy from the leaves for next year's flowering. They can grow splendidly in one spot without replanting for 3 to 4 years.
