If you are looking for a spring bulb flower that will bring a rare, warm, and sophisticated color palette to your garden, the oriental hyacinth City of Haarlem is the perfect choice. This historic and multi-award-winning variety, named in honor of the Netherlands' famous flower cultivation center, is one of the best and most sought-after yellow hyacinth varieties in the world. It completely captivates with its noble pastel shade, thick flower spikes, and excellent stability, announcing the arrival of true spring.
🌟 Warm Cream Tones and Uniform Volume
The City of Haarlem variety stands out with its strong, compact, and exceptionally stable growth, reaching a height of approximately 20 to 30 centimeters. From a dense, lush green, and shiny leaf rosette, a sturdy, thick flower stalk emerges in mid-spring. It is very robust and can effortlessly support the weight of the large flowers, safely resisting capricious spring winds and rain without additional support.
The peak of flowering occurs in mid-spring, most often in April and early May. A large, cylindrical, and incredibly dense flower spike, consisting of dozens of small, star-shaped florets, blooms on the stalk. Their color is pure elegance. At the beginning of blooming, the buds shimmer in a soft primrose yellow or light lemon yellow, but in full bloom, they acquire a warm, creamy butter yellow or ivory tone with a delicate satin sheen. The greatest triumph of this hyacinth is its scent, as it releases an incredibly strong, refined, and intoxicatingly sweet aroma that will fill the entire garden and the spring air.
🛡️ Excellent Winter Hardiness and Natural Garden Protection
City of Haarlem is an incredibly tough, low-maintenance plant that is resistant to adverse spring weather conditions. It is not harmed by sudden spring night frosts or unexpected April snow, as the thick petals bravely endure the cold and maintain their excellent structure. This variety has excellent frost resistance, so the bulbs safely overwinter in the soil and do not need to be dug up every year.
Like other hyacinths, this one serves as a reliable garden guardian. The underground bulb contains a natural protective substance whose aroma and taste are very unpleasant and even unbearable for garden pests. By planting City of Haarlem in your beds, you will naturally repel moles, voles, and mice from your flower beds, also protecting the roots of other nearby flowers. Deer and rabbits also completely ignore this plant. In contrast, above ground, the sweet flower nectar serves as valuable, early food for bees and the first butterflies.
🏡 Use in Garden Design, Floristry, and Forcing
Due to its compact growth and unique, warm pastel shade, City of Haarlem is very versatile in the garden and indoors:
- In mixed spring beds: It looks fantastic planted in groups at the front of beds next to dark blue or purple hyacinths and tulips, creating a strong and modern color contrast.
- For the front of beds and along paths: Creating low, dense, and incredibly fragrant spring borders along walkways, near terraces, or in the entrance area of a house, so that its royal aroma can be fully enjoyed daily.
- For growing in flower pots and balcony boxes: This variety is perfectly suited for spring compositions in containers on a balcony or terrace. It is also one of the best varieties for forcing in pots on a windowsill in winter.
- Florist's favorite: City of Haarlem holds a prominent place as a cut flower variety. The creamy spikes add a special texture, grandeur, and remain fresh and beautiful in a vase for a very long time.
🌱 Practical Information on Cultivation
- Planting time: Bulbs are planted in autumn, preferably from mid-September until early November, before serious frost sets in and the ground freezes. Autumn and winter cold are essential for the bulb to successfully bloom in all its glory in spring.
- Location and soil: It will thrive best in full sun or bright, moderate semi-shade, in a sheltered spot. The soil should be rich in humus, fertile, loose, light, and most importantly – excellently drained. The plant does not tolerate standing spring or winter moisture and heavy, dense clay, which can cause the bulbs to rot.
- Planting depth: Bulbs are planted approximately 12 to 15 centimeters deep, following the rule that the planting depth should be three times the height of the bulb. For maximum, immediate, and natural visual effect, it is recommended to plant them in small groups of three to five bulbs together, leaving about 10 to 15 centimeters between them.
- Care: After flowering, it is advisable to cut off the flower head itself so that the plant does not expend energy on ripening seeds but instead redirects all energy back to the bulb. The foliage should only be cut when it has naturally yellowed and withered. To maintain large flower spikes in subsequent years, it is recommended to dig up hyacinth bulbs every summer after the leaves have withered, keep them dry and warm in the summer, and replant them in the autumn.
