- Sowing and growing seedlings: Since basil is a decidedly heat-loving tropical crop, it is imperative to grow it from seedlings in the Latvian climate. Sowing seeds in pots or seed trays begins in spring – from mid-March to April. Important rule: Sow seeds relatively shallowly, about 0.3–0.5 cm deep, or simply press lightly onto moist soil, as warmth and light are necessary for germination! Constant, high warmth (+22°C to +25°C) and moderate moisture (best to water with a sprayer) must be ensured. Seeds germinate in about 1–2 weeks. When the first true leaves develop on the seedlings, carefully transplant them into individual pots.
- Planting in a permanent location: Hardened young seedlings are planted in greenhouses in mid-May, but in open, sunny beds or outdoor containers – only at the end of May or beginning of June, when the risk of spring night frosts has completely passed and the soil has warmed up well (basil categorically cannot tolerate cold and even minimal frosts). The recommended planting distance in the bed is approximately 25x30 cm.
- Location and soil selection: Cinnamon basil requires the sunniest, warmest, and best-protected spot from gusty winds in the garden, greenhouse, or on the terrace – the more sun and warmth the plant receives, the more pronounced its purple-violet hue and stronger its aroma will be. The soil should be loose, light, rich in organic matter, and with excellent water permeability. The plant cannot tolerate heavy clay and standing moisture.
- Watering and care: Regular, moderate watering with warm, settled water directly at the root in the first half of the day should be ensured, avoiding excessive wetting of the leaves. Golden tip for bushiness: To make the bush as branched and dense as possible, regularly pinch (top) the shoot tips – this will stimulate the growth of new side shoots and delay flowering, keeping the leaves exceptionally tender and juicy.
Store seeds in a dry, cool, and dark place in their original, tightly sealed packaging until sowing. Protect from moisture.
