A high-quality, exquisitely vibrant, and incomparably aromatic annual garden Chabaud Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus schabaud) flower variety, delighting gardeners and classic floristry enthusiasts with its exclusive two-tone coloration, long-lasting durability, and superior quality. Clabaud Benigna is a top-tier selection variety specifically suited for safe and stable cultivation in the middle of flower beds, cut flower rows, and large patio pots, ensuring straight, visually perfect, and strong plant clusters. The plants grow neatly and upright, reaching 40 to 50 cm in height, and boast distinctive, narrow, glaucous-blue leaves with a waxy coating and sturdy stems that bear magnificent flower cups. Professional packaging guarantees excellent, specially selected seed quality and maximum germination rates for a successful and generous start to the summer and autumn ornamental garden season.
🌱 Suitable for:
  • Growing cut flowers and exclusive bouquets: This is one of the very best and most classic cut flowers – its sturdy stems and large blooms are perfect for floral arrangements, remaining exceptionally fresh in a vase indoors for up to two weeks.
  • Aromatic garden corners and patios: These carnations boast a distinct, sweet, clove-like aroma that pleasantly fills the surrounding space with fragrance on hot summer days and evenings.
  • Romantic and traditional flower beds: An excellent and elegant mid-ground color accent in flower beds, giving the garden a noble structure and pairing wonderfully with silvery plants or delicate ornamental grasses.
  • Growing in large patio pots and containers: Thanks to its compact and sturdy growth habit, this variety looks great in deep decorative pots on sunny patios or balconies.
Key advantages:
  • Unique and noble two-tone coloring: The Clabaud Benigna variety boasts exceptionally beautiful, densely packed flowers with a pure white or cream base color, while the petal edges are magically and vividly outlined with a distinctive red or purple border.
  • Large, double flowers with fringed edges: The flower cups (up to 6 cm in diameter) consist of countless, densely arranged petals with distinctly fringed edges, visually resembling luxurious miniature roses.
  • Noble, glaucous-blue and decorative foliage: The plant not only produces beautiful flowers but also very neat, narrow, and glaucous-blue foliage with a characteristic waxy coating, which itself adds pleasant texture and contrast to the garden.
  • Exceptionally long flowering period until frost: These carnations begin to bloom in mid-summer (July) and tirelessly continue to produce new flowers until late autumn, as they are unusually hardy and not afraid of the first frosts.
  • High-value seed germination and vigor: The packaging contains a substantial amount of fine seeds with high germination capacity, ensuring a strong, uniform, and consistent start for new seedlings.
🧪 Technical data and parameters:
  • Product type: Annual flower / cut flower seeds for beds, pots, and floristry.
  • Variety: Chabaud Benigna Garden Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus schabaud).
  • Plant height: Slender, upright, on average 40 – 50 cm.
  • Growth cycle: Grown as an annual flower crop in Latvian conditions (due to the long growing season, it requires early sowing).
  • Flowering time: From mid-July until October/November (until severe frost).
⚙️ Growing instructions and recommendations:
  • Soil and site selection: Chabaud Carnations require a fully open, maximally sunny, hot, and bright location. The soil must be distinctly fertile, clay-sandy or rich in humus, neutral or limy, and very well-drained. Absolutely avoid acidic soil and standing water, as well as fresh manure.
  • Sowing times and seedling cultivation: Since Chabaud Carnations take approximately 5–6 months from sowing to flowering, seeds should be sown very early – for seedlings indoors or in a heated greenhouse in January or February. Sow seeds in moist, fine substrate about 0.3 cm deep and maintain moderate warmth (+16–18°C). Seedlings emerge uniformly within 7–10 days.
  • Seedling care and pricking out: When the young plants develop their first two true leaf pairs, prick them out into individual pots. To encourage strong bushiness and better branching from the base, it is recommended to timely pinch out the tips of young plants above the fifth leaf pair. Grow seedlings in a cool (+12–15°C) and maximally bright location to prevent them from becoming leggy.
  • Planting in the garden and care: Hardened seedlings can be planted in their permanent location in the garden or in large outdoor pots relatively early – in mid-May, as these seedlings can easily survive short spring frosts down to -3°C. When planting in a bed, maintain a distance of 25–30 cm between plants. Regular and moderate watering is necessary – the soil should neither become waterlogged nor completely dry out. Larger and heavier flower stalks may require a small support.
📦 Storage:
Until sowing, store seeds in a dry, cool, and dark place, in their original and tightly sealed packaging. Protect from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations.
