⚙️ Growing instructions and recommendations:
- Soil and site selection: Chabaud Carnations require a fully open, maximally sunny, hot, and bright location. The soil must be distinctly fertile, clay-sandy or rich in humus, neutral or limy, and very well-drained. Absolutely avoid acidic soil and standing water, as well as fresh manure.
- Sowing times and seedling cultivation: Since Chabaud Carnations take approximately 5–6 months from sowing to flowering, seeds should be sown very early – for seedlings indoors or in a heated greenhouse in January or February. Sow seeds in moist, fine substrate about 0.3 cm deep and maintain moderate warmth (+16–18°C). Seedlings emerge uniformly within 7–10 days.
- Seedling care and pricking out: When the young plants develop their first two true leaf pairs, prick them out into individual pots. To encourage strong bushiness and better branching from the base, it is recommended to timely pinch out the tips of young plants above the fifth leaf pair. Grow seedlings in a cool (+12–15°C) and maximally bright location to prevent them from becoming leggy.
- Planting in the garden and care: Hardened seedlings can be planted in their permanent location in the garden or in large outdoor pots relatively early – in mid-May, as these seedlings can easily survive short spring frosts down to -3°C. When planting in a bed, maintain a distance of 25–30 cm between plants. Regular and moderate watering is necessary – the soil should neither become waterlogged nor completely dry out. Larger and heavier flower stalks may require a small support.
