A high-quality, medium-late, and exceptionally productive chicory root variety that delights gardeners and gourmands worldwide with its excellent quality, reliability, and versatile culinary applications. Di Chiavari (also known as Cicoria a Radice di Chiavari) is a legendary and highly valued Italian heritage variety specifically bred for smooth, long, and strong roots. The root crops are slender, cylindrical, and boast a clean, snow-white color and firm texture. The generous 10-gram packaging from Franchi (Franchi Sementi) in cooperation with Virimax guarantees excellent, traditional Italian seed quality, high germination energy, and a reliable start to the gardening season.
🌱 Suitable for:
  • Preparing healthy coffee alternatives: This variety is a perfect choice for making homemade chicory coffee. The roots are roasted and ground to produce an aromatic, naturally sweet, and completely caffeine-free beverage for the whole family.
  • Italian and Mediterranean cuisine classics: The snow-white roots are an excellent ingredient for boiling, steaming, and baking in the oven with olive oil, herbs, and cheese, giving dishes a pleasant and subtle flavor nuance.
  • Healthy eating and diets: Chicory roots are famous for their very high content of the natural prebiotic inulin, which greatly improves digestive tract function and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Long-term storage during winter months: This variety excels in excellent storage capacity – harvested late in autumn and placed in a cool cellar or sand, it perfectly retains its firmness and nutritional value until spring.
Main advantages:
  • Smooth, long roots and excellent flesh: Di Chiavari forms visually appealing and uniform roots. Their flesh is firm, dense, exceptionally juicy, and retains its flawlessly natural white color during processing.
  • Subtle and pleasantly balanced taste: Unlike wild chicory, the roots of this cultivated variety have a very pleasant, mild, and sweet tone with a subtle, barely perceptible, and refreshing hint of bitterness, which is highly valued by gourmets.
  • Double benefit in one plant (roots and leaves): In addition to excellent roots, this variety also generously provides upright, green, and nutrient-rich leaves during cultivation, which can be fully utilized in fresh spring salads when young.
  • Generous and economical large packaging: The 10-gram package provides a huge quantity of top-quality seeds, allowing you to plant extensive garden areas or create secure seed reserves at an advantageous price.
  • Excellent seed germination and vigor: Franchi's professionally prepared seeds are characterized by high germination capacity and vigor, ensuring uniform sprouts and dynamic seedling development in the bed.

⚙️ Cultivation instructions and recommendations:
  • Soil selection and preparation: For roots to grow straight, long, and strong, they need deeply dug, very loose, light, and humus-rich sandy loam soil. In heavy, stony, or improperly prepared soil, the roots will grow deformed, crooked, and branched. It is desirable to ensure neutral soil acidity (pH 6.5–7.0).
  • Sowing times and depth: Seeds are sown outdoors from mid-May to the end of June. Seeds are sown approximately 1–1.5 cm deep, maintaining a distance of 30–40 cm between rows. When the sprouts grow, they are carefully thinned, leaving a distance of approximately 10–15 cm between plants to allow enough space for the roots to mature.
  • Care and watering: Regular and even watering must be ensured, especially during dry and hot summer weather, as well as during the active root development period. Lack of moisture can make the roots excessively tough and intensify bitterness. It is recommended to regularly weed and gently loosen the soil between rows.
  • Harvesting: Roots are harvested in late autumn (October/November) before permanent and heavy winter frosts set in. They are carefully dug up with garden forks to avoid breaking the fragile and juicy vegetables, the soil is shaken off, leaves are cut, and they are placed for long-term storage in a cool cellar.
📦 Storage:
Store seeds in a dry, cool, and dark place in their original, tightly sealed packaging until sowing. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
