PEANUTS, 5s
A high-value, unusual, and distinctly exotic annual legume crop that delights gardeners and experiment enthusiasts with its unique developmental cycle – the ability to ripen delicious and nutrient-rich nuts (peanuts) deep underground. Peanuts (Latin – Arachis hypogaea) are a truly fascinating garden treasure. The plant forms a small, bushy shrub with attractive, clover-like leaves that bloom with small, yellow flowers. After pollination, the flower stalks bend downwards and literally "burrow" into the soil, where hard nut shells ripen and form 5 to 10 centimeters deep. The exclusive pack of 5 carefully selected and calibrated seeds (nuts) guarantees the highest quality and excellent vitality for a successful and exciting start to the exotic garden season.
- Exotic plant enthusiasts and experimenters: A perfect choice for gardeners who want to challenge themselves and grow real peanuts in their garden or greenhouse, surprising neighbors and friends.
- Children and family gardens: An extremely exciting and educational crop for children – observing how flowers disappear into the ground after wilting and how ripe nuts are dug up from the soil in autumn is an unforgettable nature exploration adventure.
- Healthy homemade snacks: Home-grown peanuts are an excellent and pure source of protein, healthy fatty acids, and minerals, which can be roasted in the oven after harvesting and enjoyed as a healthy snack.
- Growing in greenhouses and large pots: Since peanuts are a distinctly southern crop, they are ideal for growing in vacant spaces in film or glass greenhouses (e.g., between tomatoes), as well as in large tubs on a sunny terrace.
- Unique and exciting "underground" growth cycle: This crop completely changes the perception of nut growth – the opportunity to observe the process of geocarpy (fruit formation in the soil) provides immense satisfaction to every gardener.
- Excellent nutritional value and highest quality: Home-grown peanuts are distinguished by a distinctive, creamy, and fresh taste that is completely free of industrial preservatives, ensuring maximum health benefits.
- Carefully selected and calibrated seeds: The 5-seed pack consists of specially selected, large, and healthy nuts with high germination energy, which is the main prerequisite for the successful development of the exotic plant.
- Valuable soil improver in the garden: As peanuts belong to the legume family, their root system binds atmospheric nitrogen and naturally enriches and improves the soil, enhancing its fertility for subsequent crops.
- Excellent seed germination: The seeds are professionally prepared and stored, ensuring strong germination power and uniform development of young seedlings under controlled conditions.
- Product type: Exotic legume and nut crop seeds.
- Crop: Peanuts / Groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea).
- Ripening time: Annual, heat-loving crop; harvest in autumn (September/October).
- Plant appearance: A small, compact bush with oval, green leaves and small yellow flowers; the fruits develop underground.
- Height: On average 30–40 cm.
- Content: The package contains exactly 5 top-quality seeds.
- Sowing and growing seedlings: Peanuts require a warm and relatively long growing season (approximately 120–140 days), so in Latvia's climate, they must be grown from seedlings. Sowing begins in mid-to-late April. Before sowing, the seeds can be carefully removed from their hard outer shell (without damaging the thin, brown skin) and soaked in warm water for 24 hours. Sow seeds individually in large seedling pots, about 2–3 cm deep, in loose and light soil. Ensure constant warmth (+22°C to +25°C) and moderate moisture. Sprouts typically appear in 1–2 weeks.
- Planting in a permanent location: Hardened young seedlings should only be planted in a greenhouse or in large permanent outdoor containers/beds in late May or early June, when the risk of spring night frosts has completely passed and the ground is well warmed up (peanuts do not tolerate cold and frost). The recommended planting distance between bushes is approximately 25–30 cm.
- Site and soil selection: Peanuts need the sunniest, hottest, and most wind-sheltered spot in a greenhouse or garden. Soil choice is critically important – it must be very loose, light, sandy, or light sandy loam, so that the flower stems can easily "burrow" into it. In heavy, hard, and clayey soil, the nuts will not be able to develop and will rot. It is advisable to add well-rotted compost or sand to the soil.
- Care and hilling: When the bush begins to flower and the flowers start to bend towards the ground, the soil around the plant needs to be carefully and lightly loosened, and the bush slightly hilled with soil (similar to potatoes) – this will help the fruit successfully penetrate the soil. Watering should be moderate – the soil should be slightly moist, but not wet. Approximately one month before harvest (in September), reduce watering gradually to a minimum.
- Harvesting and storage: Harvest in autumn (late September or October) before the first autumn frosts, when the plant's leaves start to yellow and wilt. Carefully dig up the entire bush with garden forks and lift it from the ground along with the roots, to which the nut shells are attached. Shake off excess soil and hang the entire bush with all its nuts for 1–2 weeks in a dry, warm, and well-ventilated room for drying. Once the shells are completely dry, pick the nuts and store them in a dry place.
Until sowing, store the seeds in a dry, cool, and dark place, in their original and tightly sealed packaging. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
